Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

As we have come to the end of term 1, I want to express my acknowledgement of the hard work the children have put into their learning and of the wonderful range of learning experiences the teachers have provided for the students. It is so nice to see the classes settled and the children working towards personal goals and achievements. Have a safe and happy holiday over the Easter Break.

Pride Values at Greenhithe School

Our PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Diligence and Excellence are important learning opportunities. We continue to refer to these during class activities and when working and playing with others. The following children have been awarded certificates: Eksifat Kaur, Isabelle Saunders, Rocco Slade, Damon Lynch, Evie Williams, William Holden, Elijah Yang and Hillary Xu.

Teacher Only Day

Just as a reminder, we will be holding a Teacher Only Day tomorrow. We will see the children back at school at the start of Term 2, Monday, 28th April.

New Fencing and Gate

You may have noticed that the latches on our new gates are set high enough so that younger children cannot open them. This is to ensure a safe environment for our students. If your child is coming to school late, please make sure you assist them with opening the gate on Isobel Road so that they can safely enter and then sign in at the office.

Parent Evening

In term 2 we will be holding a parent information evening. We are in the process of organising this evening and it will include information on literacy and maths and the refreshed curriculum. We will also have Josie Wall from Te Kawerau ā Maki joining us to kōrero about our local iwi. This will be held in the school hall on Thursday 5th June starting at 5:45 pm.

There is a parent meeting about navigating Emotional Regulation, held at AJHS, please see the attached notice about this.

School Donations and Activity Contributions

We have had a great response to contributions towards school donations so far this year. THANK YOU. Please consider making your donation if you haven’t done so already.

Our classroom activity contribution fees in term 2 will help pay for the external education company ‘Footsteps Dance Company.’ They will be helping the students prepare for our upcoming show in term 3. We would be most grateful if these contributions could be made.

Our 2025 contribution requests remain unchanged from last year and are as follows:

School Donation – $55 per term or $220 for the whole school year. The amount for 3rd or subsequent children will remain at $37.50 per term or $150 for the whole school year.

Classroom Activity Contributions – $40 per term or $160 for the whole school year.

Kindo is our preferred method for all your school payments. If you are a new family to Greenhithe School or you were unable to set up an account last year, please find all the information you need on our school website.

Ngā mihi

Community Connections

Greenhithe is a MITEY School

At Greenhithe School we are mentally healthy and feel a sense of belonging when we feel respected, valued and heard. Ideas and well being are valued, ensuring that everyone feels supported and appreciated.

Time is taken to build and nurture relationships.

Lots of MITEY has been evident in our classrooms and around our school this term!

Our focus this term has been Mana Ūkaipō, where we have explored our connections to where we live and learn while celebrating each child’s individuality.

We have had plenty of Mitey Moments happening throughout the term.

Firstly, we would like to acknowledge our newly trained Mitey Mediators—a group of Year 6 students who have volunteered their lunchtimes to patrol the playground and support younger students. They give up their own time to help resolve playground conflicts and encourage kindness among students.

Last week, we introduced Mitey Certificates at our whole school hui. These certificates are awarded by our Mitey Mediators to students they see displaying MITEY values. Well done to Tommy, Clara, Milla and Brooklyn.

Some of our wonderful Mitey Mediators are helping our students at playtimes with strategies to problem-solve with friends. Thank you for your time and dedication.

In Year 6, many students have been demonstrating key capabilities from the Learn to Grow document. They have worked hard to earn 20 kano seeds, allowing them to progress to their first licence—Tupu! As they move on to Kōhuri and Rākau, they gain more flexibility and independence in their learning. Well done to all students who have received a licence!

Ngā Tūpuna ō Te Kawerau ā Maki

Te Pou o Tupuna Rangatira

Some year 1 learning that is happening in our classes.

A Pou shares traditional Māori stories (pūrākau) through carvings. These pūrākau are important to us because Te Kawerau ā Maki are the local iwi for Tauhinu (Greenhithe).

We would like to acknowledge and thank Josie Wall from Te Kawerau ā Maki for sharing these stories with us.

Congratulations, Te Wharau and Pounamu, on winning the HOUSE competition in term 1. You have used your PRIDE values in all you do at Greenhithe. Enjoy your extra playtime!

Through our Whānau ki te Ako, you are invited to attend an Emotional Regulation: the Key to Learning and Relationships Information Evening at Albany Junior High School. The presenter is Tami Harris from Acorn Neurodiversity.

Make sure you register for the event.

From the STEAM Room

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Music

Our Year 2 & 3 children have been busy in the STEAM classroom, exploring the fascinating world of materials. Recently, they have been learning how to conduct fair experiments and accurately record their results. This hands-on approach helps students grasp the scientific method in a fun and engaging manner. The students enjoyed conducting their own floating and sinking experiments using a variety of materials. This activity not only sparked their curiosity but also enriched their understanding of buoyancy and the properties of different materials.

In their next lesson, the students took part in an exciting STEAM challenge, where they were tasked with building a boat from a specified set of materials. The objective was to create a boat that could hold weight and move across the water. This challenge was a perfect opportunity for students to plan, create, test, revise, and adapt while working together and sharing ideas.

Take a look at the photos of the children from Room 7 as they conducted their experiments and built their boats. It was a joy to see them engage so enthusiastically and apply critical thinking skills in such a creative manner.

Greenhithe School PTA.

All Welcome!

Friday Iceblocks – Term 1, every Friday outside the office from 2.45pm (starting 14 February)

Who We Are:

The Greenhithe School PTA is a passionate group of parents and teachers who work together to support the school by fundraising for much-needed items. These funds are put towards items such as playground upgrades, sports equipment and uniforms, and new resources.

We meet most months on a Tuesday from 7pm to discuss all things related to our fundraising activities and provide a forum for community feedback. Our ultimate goal is to continue to grow and nurture the great positive community we have within the school and wider Greenhithe.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate, and even if you can’t make the meeting, assisting at a PTA-supported event is super helpful!

Thanks, Sjaan and the Greenhithe PTA

Shore to Shore

Thank you to all those 178 participants that joined for a glorious walk on Sunday. Special thanks to the PTA for organising our sausage sizzle and to Claire Crutwell, Matthew Crutwell, Mike Dass and Georgia Saunders who helped with sizzling our sausages and ensuring everyone got a nice ice block to cool down. Well done, everybody! You did an amazing job! We will let you know how much money you raised for our sports equipment soon!

INTER SCHOOL SWIMMING

Last month we sent a team to compete at the Inter school swimming sports held at Coatesville School. Thank you to the parents who helped with transport and/or timing etc. We really appreciate it.

Here are the results from the day. Greenhithe School placed second overall.

Good luck to our swimmers who are representing our school at the North Shore Swimming Champs next term.

CROSS COUNTRY

Pop it in your diaries, our annual Year 3 – 6 cross country will be held at Wainoni Park on Tuesday 27th May with the saver day on Thursday 29th May. The event will start at 11am. Details will be sent out next term.

RIPPER

The Rippa teams will be named on the first week back from the holidays. There are no trials for these teams, they are split into a team with classmates or friends. Sometimes we need to make mixed teams because of our numbers.

CONGRATULATIONS

The Nuggets miniball’s team played their first game of the season a few weeks ago, which saw them record a very impressive win 52-6! It was the biggest win that the referee could remember! Keep up the great work Nuggets for the rest of the season.
