The changes to the curriculum are coming thick and fast. Our dedicated teachers are passionate about making any adjustments to our teaching that can improve the learning outcomes for your children.
Our Year 0-3 teachers are engaged in the MOE formal training in structured literacy. However, the model given to us is very challenging. All of our Year 0-3 teachers are required to attend training days on 26th, 27th and 28th of August. As you can understand, this is an organisational challenge! I was not going to call any extra teacher only days etc, but with some very careful planning and flexibility from other staff, we have managed to find a solution. Please note that on these days, if your child is in year 0-3, they will have a different teacher, most of which are our regular and familiar relievers or staff.
Over this term we are also implementing a new spelling approach in our years 4-6, linking the same structured literacy approaches from the years 0-3 into the rest of the school. Therefore our Year 4-6 teachers in this area are also undergoing some intense internally based, professional development.
This time of change in both literacy and now maths is interesting for our school. We have historically great achievement outcomes. We have used standardised assessment tools (the ones the MOE are now recommending for all schools) for all my time at Greenhithe School, which is nearly 9 years now! Our data is consistently well above the targeted level of 80% of children achieving at or above the expected level for their age. Our recent term 3 testing is showing we are achieving around 90% of our students being at or above the expected levels in both reading and maths.
We will always be looking to improve our teaching and learning, consistently looking to ensure EVERY child meets their potential, including extending beyond expected levels. The timeframes that are being mandated do present challenges for school leadership and teachers.
However, we will continue to strive for excellence in our teaching, using the latest research to improve what we do, while ensuring we keep the practices that have allowed our children to excel.
As the impacts of these mandated changes on our classrooms become clearer, I will ensure you are kept informed. For now, please know we continue to work tirelessly as a staff at Greenhithe School to ensure your child gets the best learning opportunities.
2024 and 2025 Enrolments
It is important we know our numbers to help us secure the best available teachers for your children. If you have a child turning five before the end of the school year please come and enrol them as soon as possible. Please also support us by asking any families through daycare or kindy that also may have children joining us in 2024 to call into the office.
If you have a child turning five in 2025 please come and enrol them as early as possible. This supports our recruitment processes for next year.
