Principal’s News

Dear parents,

Our PRIDE values of Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Diligence and Excellence are very important to us at school.  The children have lots of opportunities to use their school values in the classroom, in the playground and on the sports field. It is lovely to hear from our teachers how well the children are using their values! Over the start of this term, the following children have been awarded certificates: Carter Cathcart, Ella Olsen, Frankie Clarkson, Lilae Narsa, Rocco Slade, Ash Hurst and Ruby Wilson.

Government Changes and Updates

I am sure you will have seen the announcements over the last little while about schooling in New Zealand. We were already meeting the ‘hour a day’ of reading, writing and maths requirements and our policy on the use of phones was also in place. We are fortunate that regular attendance is not a major issue at our school. We have well established systems in place for this, and our local attendance service providers, who support children where the school raises a concern with regular attendance, are excellent and work closely with us when we have any concerns over a child’s attendance. The school lunch debate at the moment doesn’t affect our school directly, as we do not qualify for this.

The structured literacy announcement was no surprise and we have had a phonics based programme in place for several years, helping us to have reading achievement data at our school of over 90% achieving the required level. However, our leaders and teachers are consistently reviewing and enhancing our programmes in line with research. We are currently reviewing our programmes in literacy to see if there are improvements to be made. As we make enhancements, we will keep you updated through either the newsletter or a parent information evening.

We are expecting many other systemic changes over this year, including assessment, reporting, curriculum changes and funding changes. While the pace of change can be challenging for schools, we have a great team here, who have your child’s education and wellbeing at the centre of every decision or change that we will make.

Change in Weather and Uniforms

The weather is definitely becoming more wintry and I would like to make some reminders about our uniform requirements please.

  • Any long sleeved top worn under the school shirt MUST BE NAVY BLUE AND PLAIN.
  • Only school fleeces should be worn over the top, any other jumpers, hoodies etc will not be allowed and the children asked to remove them.
  • Jeans are not suitable for school. Any shorts, skorts, skirts and trousers must be plain and navy blue.
  • School raincoats can be purchased as well.

Our children look very smart in their uniform, please ensure your child’s uniform meets our requirements.

Pink Shirt Day

Friday 17th May will be a non uniform day and a gold coin donation will be collected from the students at the gates. Our School House Leaders will be there to collect your donations from you. Pink Shirt Day is part of a powerful movement to spread aroha and kindness and end bullying. We would love for our students to wear something pink and gift a gold coin donation to this charity.

Jumping June!

The Heart Foundation is New Zealand’s heart charity, leading the fight against heart disease. Greenhithe School are going to fundraise for the Heart Foundation charity so they can research into new and innovative treatments for heart disease and specialist training for doctors.

We will be engaging the children in getting active by skipping everyday. On the 7th June we will be holding our Jumping June event, where children will have different skipping activities to do. We will have a non uniform school day on the 7th where children can wear the colour red. This will be a gold coin donation. Thank you for your support.

Ray King’s visit

We were lucky today to have Ray King, author of the Tauhinu book that we use at school to support the local histories part of our curriculum, pop in to see the Waka playground, which his book provided the information for. Ray is a local historian who has local knowledge that was lovely to hear. He spoke about how the school building in Collins Park was saved and gave us many other little anecdotes from the history of Greenhithe. He read about what we had done in the Greenhithe Life magazine and wanted to come and see it for himself! We are very lucky to have such knowledgeable locals who are supporting the learning of the children at our school.

Whole School Art Competition

The book is going to be called Flavours From Home.

Our P.T.A. are looking for pictures of food you eat at home. Think about some of the special things your whanau cooks. What do you eat at special times and celebrations in your house?

The best pictures will be featured in the Greenhithe School Cook Book, which will be full of recipes from our school families.

Draw your pictures of food on a plate; it can be any size.

Make the pictures colourful and bright!

You can decorate the plate too!

Deliver your pictures to Mrs. Sam with your name on.

You have until the middle of this term 2 to get your entries in.

Enjoy being creative to support our community.

Greenhithe PTA

The Greenhithe School PTA are busy in planning mode for 2024 and would like to share some of the exciting activities we will be running. As per our previous years we will run the Second-Hand Uniform sale and Pizza lunches, support the school athletics days and Cross Country with iceblocks and sausages.  There will be a School Disco, a Movie Night held in the hall which we will run a survey that the children can vote for the movie they want to watch, Quiz night for the parents, Summer Festival will go ahead in December as well. Over the course of this year the PTA will be organising a Greenhithe School cookbook and asking families for their favourite recipes plus we will have a Maths-a-thon to round out the curriculum during Term 3-4.
We meet monthly on a weekday evening to discuss all things related to school life, provide a forum for community feedback, and fundraise for additional school resources. Our ultimate goal is to continue to grow and nurture the great positive community we have within the school and wider Greenhithe.
Everyone is welcome and is encouraged to come and participate. All of these wonderful initiatives need community support, so please reach out via our email ([email protected]) to find out more!

Pop along to the next meeting on 4th June in the school staffroom at 7pm.

Dance Pointe

Dance Pointe Peforming Arts performed at Disneyland LA and Universal Studios Hollywood in the April School Holidays. They also attended a number of workshops, including the Disney Imagination Campus Workshop.

It was a great experience for them to dance at these locations, and they worked very hard to get there with weekend rehearsals for over a year. Frankie and Riley also did lots of fundraising to support their experience.

YEARS 3-6 CROSS COUNTRY

Our Years 3-6 annual school cross country is coming up on Tuesday 28th May (saver day, Thursday 30th May). It will once again be held at Wainoni Park and the Pony Club, starting around 11am and finishing around 1pm. A letter went home last week asking for parent help to walk the children down to the park to have a ‘practice walk’ over the course on Wednesday 22nd May in the afternoon. Another letter will be sent home shortly with all of the details of the actual event,  so keep an eye out for that. For those keen runners, Years 3, 4 and 5 will run approximately 1.5km and Year 6 run approximately 2km.

WINTER CODES

Good luck to all the hockey and netball players who are starting their season over the next week. We can’t wait to see how your season goes.

CONGRATULATIONS

During the last weekend of the school holidays, some of our netball teams participated in a preseason tournament. The Magic Netball team played really well and had a lot of fun. Here are some pictures from their day. All the best girls for a great season ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS

On Sunday 5th May, the Greenhithe School Football Club Under 9 ‘Tornados’ team played in the Northern Rovers FC – 9th and 10th Grade Festival at Becroft Park. They played five games throughout the day against clubs from around the Auckland and Northland area, which came to a nail-biting final against Northland FC, which they won! The boys were awarded gold medals and a trophy, and should be very proud of themselves. The team members from Greenhithe School included Ash, Austin, Caleb, Jackson, Luca and Toby.

Way to go boys, great result!
